2.5T Skyactiv Tuning FAQs

With our new OEM+ Tier 1 Tuning Kit being release for the 2.5T Skyactiv engines on May 20th, we’ve had a lot of questions about the tune, safety, limitations, etc.

So we’ve compiled as many of those questions into one repository, both here and on the product page itself.

How does it compare to the JB4? Can I use the tune with a JB4 at the same time?

No, the JB4 piggyback device interferes with the ECU tune and cannot be used at the same time.

Here’s what our Early Access testers who switched from the JB4 device have said:
“Much more natural feeling. The engine sounds and feels happier, power delivery is much smoother, linear, and predictable. Just feels much more refined, and that’s all without added boost.” -Brian S.

Tier 2 Discounted Upgrades

Our Tier 2 kit option is being developed to increase the maximum boost pressure, and pushing the peak gains of the tune.

Anyone who purchases the Tier 1 OEM+ kit, will be able to upgrade to the Tier 2 by paying the price difference, minus a discount.

So if the Tier 2 tuning kit releases at $950, Tier 1 kit owners can upgrade to the Tier 2 by paying only $300 minus the discount.

Full details and Tier 2 pricing TBD.

What are the actual performance gains?

+10 lb-ft peak gain, 327 lb-ft
+30 lb-ft gained at ~3200 RPM

+4 WHP peak gain, 238 WHP
+45 WHP gained at ~5600 RPM

All testing performed on an AWD dyno with 91 octane, Short Ram Intake, and axleback exhaust.

I already own the MazdaEdit license/Tactrix Cable

Great! We can extend a discount code to you for whichever components you already own.

Is it compatible with my modifications?

Currently, the OEM+ Tier 1 tuning kit is compatible with all modifications available on the market:

Intake, inlet pipe, downpipe, exhaust (including 80mm).

Is it compatible with my CX-?

The OEM+ Tier 1 tuning kit compatibility with the various CX models is currently unknown (May 3rd).
We are actively working to confirm compatibility across all models and all model years.

If you own a CX model, CX-5, 30, 50, please send us an email with your model, model year, and modifications, as we will offer the OEM+ Tier 1 kit to you at a discount for confirmation testing.

Does the OEM+ Tune adjust anything with the transmission?

At this time, software limitations do not allow for any TCM calibrations or direct adjustments.

That said, our Early Access testers have reported that shifts may feel much smoother, and more refined as a result of the OEM+ Tier 1 tune.

Will tuning void my warranty?

Unless the ECU itself is the source of the warranty issue, tuning will generally not be a concern or even a consideration for warranty claims. We provide the ability to return the ECU to OEM calibration, removing the tune completely until after servicing is complete.

Dealerships lack the ability to detect custom flashed tuning files. They may be able to view a flash count, but not that the tables have been modified.

While the possibility always exists for a dealership to deny a claim, it's very unlikely and not something we've ever seen actually happen in over 6 years of tuning the latest generation of Mazdas.

Is tuning my car safe? And will I damage anything long term?

There are always risks involved in modifying a vehicle. It is up to you to properly maintain your vehicle and reduce that risk as much as possible. Factory tunes are designed to reduce emissions and to suit every vehicle coming out of the plant, and this typically leaves a very large 'safety margin'. The 2.5T factory calibration is designed to accommodate 87 octane, which leaves a substantial margin for safety when using 91+ Premium Octane.

Our OEM+ Tier 1 tune further maintains safety and reliability by keeping the factory boost limits, and not increasing the maximum pressure. We are confident that this tune is safely within the limits of the factory drivetrain components (transmission, transfer case, differentials) provided that abusive behavior such as launching, brake boosting, etc. are avoided at all costs.

Tuning the engine will require diligent regular maintenance at the factory recommended intervals to keep it running 100%.
If it was necessary prior to tuning, it’s increasingly relevant with a tune as well.

Does tuning reduce fuel economy?

Not on its own. Tuning inherently improves the efficiency of your engine, allowing the engine to produce more torque for the same RPM and throttle position. This mean LESS throttle % is required to maintain the same engine RPM during cruise conditions and daily driving.

We have seen a fuel mileage improvement of 2-3 MPG in our development testing.

Driving habits, maintenance habits, and excess cargo are the primary factors in fuel economy.

Do I have to run premium octane?

Yes. For all 2.5T tuning kits, 91+ Premium Octane Fuel is required.

Should you wish to continue using 87 octane, or want to make use of 87 for a road trip, the OEM calibration is the most suitable for this use. You will be able to flash back to OEM at any time.
