What is the Tier 1 Tune?
The Tier 1 kit fixes the downfalls of the factory tune, without pushing the limits of safety or reliability:
✔ +50 lb-ft with improved low RPM turbo spool & throttle control
✔ +60 WHP at high RPMs, with no more boost drop off or throttle closure
✔ Custom Built for Your ECU, no generic OTS files — we tune specifically for your car
✔ AFRs optimized for all modifications currently available on the market
✔ No torque limit stutters or throttle closure issues from performance mods
✔ No change to maximum boost pressure, for maximum engine safety by design.
✔ Ignition timing optimized for 91+ Octane with the included custom revisions
Tier 1 Mod Requirements:
-
No minimum requirement.
Upgraded panel filter with the OEM intake box, or Cold air style intakes like Takeda aFe or BMS Stage 2 are recommended.
Inlet pipes, charge pipes, intercoolers, etc can also be upgraded as your budget allows.
Short Ram style intakes are not recommended with our 2.5T Tier 1 tunes. Excess intake temperatures result in inconsistent performance.
Heat shields and heat boxes have been tested and proven ineffective at preventing heat soak in city driving conditions.
-
No minimum requirement.
Upgraded Catback Exhaust recommended. LP Custom Fab Catback Exhausts are available on our site.
-
Throttle/Pedal commanders, JB4 Piggy backs, or other devices that influence the ECU data cannot be combined with any of our tunes.
Aftermarket Diverter/Blow off Valves are not compatible and can cause performance issues on the Skyactiv platform with Tier 1 and Tier 2 tunes.
These aftermarket valves are not calibrated for the Skyactiv system, and open at slightly different voltages than the OEM valve. The result is a constant “flutter” of the diverter valve, opening and closing when the boost pressure is close to the desired target.
What is the Tier 2 Tune?
The Tier 2 kit targets MAXIMUM gains, offering the best performing petrol tune on the market:
✔ 360+ lb-ft with sustained torque through mid range RPMs
✔ 280+ WHP without needing to mix ethanol fuel
✔ Maximum increase in peak boost pressure
✔ Maximum optimal flow from the factory turbo (~30lb/min)
✔ FULL throttle opening throughout entire RPM range
✔ Custom Built for Your ECU, no generic OTS files — we tune specifically for your car
✔ AFRs safely optimized for peak performance without any fuel pump upgrades required
✔ No torque limit stutters or throttle closure issues from performance mods
✔ Ignition timing optimized for 91+ Octane with the included custom revisions
Tier 2 Mod Requirements:
-
Minimum requirement: upgraded panel filter with the OEM intake box
Cold air style intakes like Takeda aFe or BMS Stage 2 are recommended.Inlet pipes, charge pipes, intercoolers, etc can also be upgraded as your budget allows.
NO Short Ram style intakes are permitted with our 2.5T Tier 2 tunes. Excess intake temperatures with our increased boost and torque targets will result in inconsistent performance, and potentially dangerous conditions.
Heat shields and heat boxes have been tested and proven ineffective at preventing heat soak in city driving conditions.
-
Minimum requirement: Upgraded Catback Exhaust.
Axleback only upgrades are not sufficient to increase exhaust flow for the increase targets with Tier 2.
LP Custom Fab Catback Exhausts are available on our site.
-
Throttle/Pedal commanders, JB4 Piggy backs, or other devices that influence the ECU data cannot be combined with any of our tunes.
Aftermarket Diverter/Blow off Valves are not compatible and can cause performance issues on the Skyactiv platform with our Tier 1 and Tier 2 tunes.
These aftermarket valves are not calibrated for the Skyactiv system, and open at slightly different voltages than the OEM valve. The result is a constant “flutter” of the diverter valve, opening and closing when the boost pressure is close to the desired target.

“Much more natural feeling. The engine sounds and feels happier, power delivery is much smoother, linear, and predictable. Just feels much more refined, and that’s all without added boost.”
“I started out really craving power but ended up really falling for the smoothness.
Something I felt this car has lacked since the day I drove it off the lot.”
Who is DRTuned Racing?
Hi, my name’s Daniel, and I run everything you see here at DRTuned Racing!
What surprises a lot of people, is to learn that DRTuned Racing isn’t a “team” or a corporate group of people. It’s just me, I do it all. The tuning, emails, marketing, web design, and all the ongoing development.
I’ve been tuning Mazda’s, and exclusively MZR and Skyactiv engines, for the last 10 years now. This brand, and the Mazda community, is far more than just a fun side hobby for me; this is my livelihood, and has been for the last several years.
I hope that you’ll allow me to join you on this journey with your Mazda, and add your story to the hundreds of other incredible Mazda owners I’ve worked with over the last 10 years.
Remote Tuning — How Does it Work?
Toronto, to Newfoundland, Texas or Iceland, We've Got You Covered.
All 2.5T Mazda tuning kits use a remote/email tuning process to tune your Mazda wherever you are around the globe!
With each tuning kit, you’ll receive the necessary software license & hardware cable to connect to your Mazda’s ECU. Once you download your factory OEM tune from the ECU, we’ll generate your “Basemap” the first tuning file.
After that, you’ll be able to drive around to record datalogs, which we review in detail to see the REAL data from your engine specifically. We use that data to make adjustments to the tune, and send you back those tune revisions.
This remote tuning process continues until the calibration is fully optimized, and the tune is considered complete!
✔ 6 FREE custom revisions with datalogging
✔ Tuning Software License (windows laptop required)
✔ Hardware Cable
✔ Lifetime support for any issues arising from the tune
✔ Detailed step by step instructions with remote tuning support
✔ Up to 4 months to complete your tuning process!
Remote tuning requires you to send us datalogs and entitles you to six (6) file revisions to optimize the final calibration for your setup, within a maximum of 4 months from date of purchase.
We want to ensure everyone receives the level of support and care that is needed to guide you through the remote tuning process. This file and time limit allows us to ensure all tuning is kept up to date, and we are not bogged down servicing tunes that should have been long since complete. The end result is more time and attention available to serve you better.
Delays and situations come up, and we are more than accommodating to ensure that you are able to complete the tuning that you have purchased. If you believe you will be unable to complete tuning in this timeframe, just let us know and we can happily work out a solution for your situation.
FAQs
-
No, the JB4 piggyback device interferes with the ECU tune and cannot be used at the same time.
Here’s what our customers who switched from the JB4 device have said:
“Much more natural feeling. The engine sounds and feels happier, power delivery is much smoother, linear, and predictable. Just feels much more refined, and that’s all without added boost.” -Brian S.

There are always risks involved in modifying a vehicle. It is up to you to properly maintain your vehicle and reduce that risk as much as possible.
Factory tunes are designed to reduce emissions and to suit every vehicle coming out of the plant, and this typically leaves a very large 'safety margin'.
The 2.5T factory calibration is designed to accommodate 87 octane, which leaves a substantial margin for safety when using 91+ Premium Octane.
Our OEM+ Tier 1 tune further maintains safety and reliability by keeping the factory boost limits, and not increasing the maximum pressure.
Tuning the engine will require diligent regular maintenance, with oil changes, spark plug changes etc. at the factory recommended intervals to keep it running 100%.
-
At this time, software limitations do not allow for any TCM calibrations or direct adjustments.
However, ECU tuning will improve the overall smoothness and refinement of the engine and transmission operations, which can lead to improved shift quality.
-
Unless the ECU itself is the source of the warranty issue, tuning will generally not be a concern or even a consideration for warranty claims. We provide the ability to return the ECU to OEM calibration, removing the tune completely until after servicing is complete.
Dealerships lack the ability to detect custom flashed tuning files. They may be able to view a flash count, but not that the tables have been modified.
While the possibility always exists for a dealership to deny a claim, it's very unlikely and not something we've ever seen actually happen in over 10 years of tuning the latest generation of Mazdas.
-
Yes, the 2.5T Tuning Kit is developed and thoroughly tested to remain within the safe limits of the factory drivetrain components.
-
Not on its own. Tuning inherently improves the efficiency of your engine, allowing the engine to produce more torque for the same RPM and throttle position. This mean LESS throttle % is required to maintain the same engine RPM during cruise conditions and daily driving.
We have seen a fuel mileage improvement of 2-3 MPG in our development testing.
Driving habits, maintenance habits, and excess cargo are the primary factors in fuel economy.
-
Yes. For all 2.5T tuning kits, 91+ Premium Octane Fuel is required.
Should you wish to continue using 87 octane, or want to make use of 87 for a road trip, the OEM calibration is the most suitable for this use.
-
Anyone who purchases the Tier 1 kit, will be able to upgrade to the Tier 2 at a discount.
